Quartermaster Yacht Club

Application for Admission

Dear Applicant(s), Thank you for your interest in the Quartermaster Yacht Club.  We would like to tell you a little about the club.  QYC was organized for the purpose of encouraging boating and yachting of all kinds, and to take advantage of the natural recreational opportunities in our area.  Our membership represents a cross-section of the community.

The facilities of the club include floats for moorage and a clubhouse located on the shore of Inner Quartermaster Harbor.  Our moorage facilities are limited, and there is usually a waiting list for slips.  The club is principally supported by moorage fees and annual dues.   Whenever possible, maintenance and building projects are performed and supported by the membership.  There are also many other opportunities for member participation in support of club needs.  Some formal participation events are scheduled as needed; many other opportunities arise for individual contribution.  All members are required to contribute to club needs on a yearly basis.

Social events include an annual Commodore’s Ball, a traditional Opening Day celebration, a Fourth of July picnic, potlucks, cruises and sailboat races.  In addition, there are monthly general membership meetings on 3rd Thursdays, at 7:30 p.m. in our clubhouse, Meyers Hut.   Some of these meetings have a planned program with a subject of general interest to boaters.  A few are associated with celebrations such as our Holiday Brunch.  There is also a Youth Sailing Program that is open to all island youths.

Applicants can choose between two classes of membership; Active, which is required for permanent moorage, or Active Social, with restricted access to temporary moorage. The initiation fee for new Active members is: $1,000.00; $500.00 for Active Social members.   As of 2024, the annual dues are $600 (active), and $300 (Social) members.  Half of the dues payment is assessed in January and the other half in July. There are currently no scheduled annual increases in dues.

To be considered for membership, applicants must reside on Vashon/Maury Island.  Prospective members must be sponsored by two Active, Social, or Life, members and must attend two general club functions as guests before submitting their application.  Applicants must attend an orientation meeting with the Admissions Committee before their application is submitted to the Board.  Upon approval you will be notified and welcomed to QYC.

We look forward to meeting you and hope that this letter has provided you with some pertinent information about Quartermaster Yacht Club.

Sincerely,

QYC Board of Trustees

Note to Sponsoring Club Members:

If you are sponsoring prospective members, help them supply the required information. Please remember that prospective members must attend two club functions, and be sponsored by two club members, who must write letters of recommendation and sign the form before it is submitted.

Review of Primary Sponsor’s Duties:

  • Work with the applicants to see that they have the forms and have letters of recommendation from you and a second sponsor.
  • Help your applicants fulfill their 2-function obligation. For example: Invite them to meetings; bring them to a work party; or ask them to join a cruise. Keep them informed and make sure they feel welcome.
  • Direct the applicants to mail the completed forms with the recommendation letters and attached check for $1000 ($500 for Active Social Membership) to: P.O. Box 2927, Vashon, WA 98070; Attn Membership Chair. She/he will see that the application is published in the Jib Sheet and will schedule an orientation meeting with the applicants. Sponsors are welcome to attend the meeting.
  • After orientation, the application will be presented at the next QYC Board meeting. Upon acceptance by the Board, the applicants will be welcomed and informed of their pro-rated dues obligation prior to induction into the club.
  • Please note that since the application process requires publication In the Jib Sheet and approval by the Board, applicants may not be able to proceed to induction during the months of July and August when Board and General meetings are not held and the Jib Sheet is not published.
  • However, all privileges of membership will become available upon approval by the Board.
